ICE enforcement in California

There is a 45-day enforcement operation refers to “Operation Safe California,” a reported U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) immigration enforcement surge launched across California in early October 2026. According to internal agency sources originally reported by the Washington Examiner, field agents have been instructed to conduct widespread sweeps and arrest any undocumented immigrants they encounter during this 45-day period, regardless of whether the individuals have a criminal history.

Key Details of the Operation

  • Target Areas: The unannounced crackdown reportedly began near the San Diego border and is moving progressively northward through Los Angeles, the Central Valley, and parts of Northern California, including Sacramento.
  • Tactics and Sightings: Local rapid-response networks and legal groups have documented an uptick in ICE activity. Reports indicate agents in unmarked vehicles are detaining individuals outside of workplaces, construction sites, gas stations, and shopping centers. Internal sources allege that leadership is heavily pressuring officers to increase overall arrest numbers.
  • Official Stances: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has declined to confirm or deny the specific operational details of “Operation Safe California,” citing officer safety and operational security. However, DHS noted that federal agents routinely enforce immigration laws nationwide. Some congressional briefings indicate the focus remains on individuals with active warrants, though advocacy groups dispute this based on recent field detentions.
  • Political Fallout: California Governor Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers have fiercely criticized the timing of the surge—which occurs just weeks before the November midterm elections—labeling it an indiscriminate “campaign of fear”. State officials have urged residents to review their legal protections under California’s sanctuary laws.

It is highly recommended that each person keep a copy of their documents such as passport, photo ID, any paper in immigration, phone number of relatives and attorney to prepare in any circumstances. They should also know their rights under the constitution to remain silent and not to sign any papers and be able to speak to an attorney.
